Peptide Vial vs Pre-filled Pen: Which Format Should You Choose?

Most peptides at Orion are stocked in both formats. The right choice depends on how tolerant your protocol is to reconstitution variability and how often you dose.

Lyophilised vials

Vials ship as a dry powder cake and require reconstitution with bacteriostatic water before use. Advantages:

  • Longer unopened shelf life (dry powder is stable for years).
  • Full control over concentration, tailor to your protocol.
  • Typically lower cost per mg of peptide.

Trade-offs: reconstitution error, extra time per session, and required consumables.

Pre-filled pens

Pens ship as a ready-to-use solution. Advantages:

  • No reconstitution, no math, no consumables.
  • Identical dose across sessions (removes a major source of variability).
  • Easier to transport for multi-site studies.

Trade-offs: higher cost per mg, shorter shelf life once opened, and fixed concentration.

Which to pick

  • Pick a vial when the protocol runs long, needs custom concentrations, or when peptide cost matters.
  • Pick a pen when dosing precision matters more than cost, or when the researcher is new to peptide handling.

Storage, both formats

  • Refrigerate at 2 to 8 degrees C.
  • Do not freeze.
  • Vials, use within 4 weeks after reconstitution.
  • Pens, follow the printed expiry on the pen label.
